Wellington City Day Trip
We suggest taking one of the half-hourly scenic trains that depart from Waikanae Station, just a 2 minute walk from Kapiti Gateway Motel. Avoid the driving and parking hassles and leave your car with us. The 1 hour train takes in wonderful views of Kapiti Island, Porirua and Wellington Harbours along the way.
Wellington is an exciting, vibrant capital city with regular events to tempt visitors throughout the year. It’s also a delightfully compact city and visitors can get to most major attractions on foot, or by taking one of the Hot Spot bus tours available.
If you’re attending an event at Wellington Regional Stadium (formerly Westpac Trust Stadium) a convenient pedestrian ramp leads from Wellington Railway Station directly to the stadium gates.
The beautiful Wellington Waterfront area is easily accessed from Wellington Railway Station and you can walk to Te Papa (the National Museum of New Zealand) by following the harbour’s edge, or take a bus from the station. Te Papa is one of Wellington’s top attractions, and you can spend hours on the first floor alone, taking in interactive natural history displays on everything from earthquakes to the giant squid.
The Museum of City and Sea is also on the waterfront and provides a unique look at the city’s connection with the sea through the decades. Walk on up in to Courtenay Place, with its many wonderful eateries and restaurants to tempt your taste buds, and to the fascinating Cuba Quarter. And from there the walk back through the city to the station provides plenty of opportunities for some serious retail therapy.
A stone’s throw away from the Station is Lambton Quay where you’ll find the entry point for the Cable Car This is an excellent way of enjoying a wonderful view of the city for pedestrians, providing a smooth ride up past Victoria University to the top of the extensive Botanical Gardens.
After your big day out in the city, enjoy the peaceful train ride back to Kapiti Gateway Motel. Relax, plan tomorrow’s activities, enjoy a soak in the spa bath and head down to the village or beach for dinner.
